my luck...

so my lights start to die on me. i get it checked out they tell me i need a new battery. got it. then have the same prob a few days later. they tell me a need a new alt. so i was working on getting it. when i got the new battery i got a new tie down for it. well the tie down doesn't work well with the corolla. so on the way to work yestarday, my car started gettting louder and louder. thought they stole my cat, no my battery moved up against the power steering pulley, the pulley rubbed a hole in the side of the battery and acid started spitting everywhere. well the acid got on my 25yr old stock headers and ate thru the bolts causing it to come apart. so i lost what little power i had left in the car. yeah. try telling your boss you cant make it back to work for that reason. lol.

Damn, thats sucks!

I didnt think the acid would eat through the header bolts, thats nuts!!!

neither did i. but i guess the break in the battery happend a few days ago so it was sitting for two days or so just eating thru it.

well when you get a fnew battery and a new exhaust ... check with a volt meter the and check to make sure the batttery is at 12.5 v should be if its new. then turn on the car check the battery temrminals again and it should read between 13.2 to 13.5 v that would be your altenator if you dont get that your altnator is dead and if you get 14.2 v to 15 v your voltage regulator is dead. if everything is in spec your lights shouldnt be having much of a problem . now if you still are occuring a problem and everyhting is working the way it is you might want to look for a few things, check your wireing in the wirign loom for the lights to see if there is carrosion that could cause a malfuction and a flicker. make sure there is now short in the wires and i mean if there is a break in the wiring grounding out. easier way tio find a short is to get a ohm meter clamp a lead to both ends of the same wire. and shack the wire in the loom inbetween if you lose ohm readings or aka continuity you have a short somewhere.
o yeah if you have corrosion on any wiring try to replace the wiring and if it is a bad connector which is common to happen, you can take a cup of baking soda mixed with water and dip the connector in . you can use coke but its only a quike and sticky fix lol... baking soda nuturalizes corrosion cause by acids and nutrulaizes acids. i hope this long thing i typed helps you with your haead light issue when you fix your exhaust. also i figured you dant have to take it to a shop and have some person that dont know what there just throwing parts at it... when there is a electrical issue the person is to bring out there DMM out and cheack voltage and continuty . check each connector for corrosion.

yes you can replace just the voltage regulator . you need to pull off the altanator and its should be on the back of the altanator if i recall. but really cheack are your cennectors and wiring on your lights and double check your altnator because they should of said your voltage reg was bad when they check your battery . who ever did tested your car sounds like they dont know what there doing. not to sound like a dick. it really sounds like there throwing parts at it to try to fix the issue. because if the volt reg goes out the voltage becomes max high which is usually at 15v. and your lights run of voltage if you have more then enough volts i dont see why your lights would have an issue just double check or have someone give you a second opinion. again i cant stress enough check your conectors and wiring for shorts or corrosion. sorry i cant spell. lol...and agian sorry i like to talk so i type alot.

no prob. thank you for the help. i had a few people look at it. they told me my battery was dead and bad so i got a new one. then they told me it was the volt meter on the alt and that i had to replace the alt. so i don't know. when i take the ground of the battery the car still runs. but whats happening is the battery is draining when i use the lights. the alt i guess charges enough to keep the car running. but not with the lights on.

volt meter get a volt meter . lol...

when you turn on your lights with the car runing does the battery light come on!

yes. along with the e-brake light. they will sometimes just flicker on sometimes they stay on. when i turn the blinkers on they flash with it. lol. i could have gotten all this figured out on here weeks ago but didn't have my computer up and running.

mark, are you sure you can change out the voltage regulator on the 4age alt? i'm not familiar with that ever being an external option like on the 4AC or 2/3TC motors. i maybe wrong though.
