This doesn't sit well with me, I know it is progressing as a sport and with progression things change but ONE 86 left! (excluding gushi's fr-s, i don't count that even as the next generation of the 86) Has anyone read the article on SpeedHunters, The Last Starfighter?

One of the reasons why might be that the rules are different than d1 and the other might be the horsepower... Just read about saito's sc430 it has about 1000hp or more lol so maybe that is why there is not a lot 86 left i dunno that's what i think... could be wrong

Yeah, Taka & Yoshie are out there on their own representing all of us AE86 enthusiasts by default on the national level here.
Though the article is from August it's still driving the point home in that he is currently the last AE86 on that pro-grid.

Of course, there is also the case one could make that there are only so many spare parts left for a 26+ year old car that can sometimes see demolition derby-like action.

Yeah the biggy here is the rules keep Aono from running a legit sized tire since his car is so light. Which is total BS because we can has 1200hp nitros breathing monster but a 450hp solid axle car cant run a matched tire combo. The trick in FD is a fat car that has a lot of TQ so you can use that big 300mm wide tire and smash on small agile machines. HULK SMASH!

Frankly, I think they are trying to tailor the rules to newer car manufacturers for the purpose of gleaning more advertising dollars. Old school cars, while nostalgic and stalwart competitors, do NOT bring advertising revenue into D1 IMO. I am sure it is not in the interest of Formula Drift's revenue stream to have these older cars beating much later model cars.

Eh, it's a capitalist nation, it has to be. Other chances will come.

Sadly the 86 just doesn't have enough young in its lung for the waterwing anymore. :/

oh the 86 has enough lung left for quite some time. it just might not have the same 4age that it initially had. too many people are swapping to v8's to stay up with the competition. Also it's a little more difficult to put a v8 in an 86 than is a 13,14,15 or some other bigger body car.

Do not feel like reviving an old thread but this is pretty cool. There will soon be a feature film released about Taka, his ae86, and the reasons behind the demise of the chassis at Formula D level. It also gives off the vibe as being a recognition for the work and skill Taka and his wife have earned over the years. Those two are effing awesome. Here is the trailer:
