carbs dont fit on manifold

Post by Manifesto »

forgive me if the images are too large, i left them this way for clarity

ive a smallport intake manifold by TWM
my carbs are the mikuni Type R 40mm judging by the pics on wolf creek racing.

pics will show that the carbs sit too closely, and the studs overlap. ive removed all of the hardware for clarity. my first impulse was to file all of this down, but i feel this may remove to much material, and since this is the butterfly, id be making a major mistake...

ive though about elongating the bolt holes on the carbs. ive though about cutting the manifold in half and elongating the bolt holes and spreading it wider apart on the head. ive thought about gring the flange for the carbs at an angle to make the carbs point outwards a bit...

ANY thoughts on this matter are appreciated.

The carbs don't sit directly on the manifold. You should get a set of phenolic spacers or soft mounts for DCOE still carbs.

As long as they are for DCOE style carbs they'll fit unless they are for 40 DCOEs. Then the bore would be a little too small. I'm sure they could be opened up though.

That doesn't look like anything that a grinder couldn't quickly fix.

here are some more picks with my linkages attached

here is a close up of the nuts installed on the butterfly rod:

i am afraid that filing them down wont leave enough thread to hold everything together. after all, if i take two thread off, thatll leave only two, maybe three to hold everything together...

Do both plates open and close smoothly or do they gall on the inside of the carbs anywhere?

Also, just to be sure - when you tighten the nuts on each end of the throttle shaft do not use a wrench on one end to hold the shaft in place as you tighten the opposite end. You will twist the shaft and the plates will no longer be aligned and you'll be hunting a mystery vacuum leak for all eternity and will never get those carbs synched.

I'm beginning to get a bad feeling that that manifold is a messed up caste copy of an original TWM mani. Now do you know if that mani was specifically intended for 40 DCOE (or 40PHH Solex/Mikuni) carbs? Those carbs are slightly smaller in body size to their 45/44 big brother versions.

plates open and close smoothly, as far as i can tell at a glance, the carbs seem to be in fine order.

as far as the intake...
fits on the head great, everything lines up perfectly.
if you put one carb on, it fits great on either side, the bores are centered

one of the carbs goes gall when opening it from fully closed.

i dont know anyrthing about the manifold except the numbers 0112 0212 TWM are cast on it. according to old TWM PDFs there were only two intakes made for the $a, the smallport and the bigport
