engine replacement bolts

Post by ga_goosh »

I am having issues with the toyota oem cam journal bolts. i broke the first one off in my old head that was in a running motor and i broke the second one in the new head just trying to remove it...(very frustrating) i no longer trust the oem bolts so is there any kind of replacements? ARP maybe? I looked it up and i cant seem to find any ARP cam journal bolts. I dont want to go to the hardware store either. i want to buy some good bolts that i shouldnt have to worry about breaking. i am getting tired of broken bolts. my motor is a 16v large port

those bolts are only torqued to 19 lb/ft... how the hell did you break them? I've been into at least 20 4age's now and never have I broken one...

the first one broke at less than 9ft/lb when i was installing my cams after my head gasket. that bolt had to have been weakened or stressed some how cuz i hardly put any force on it at all. the second one was being stored in the head and it broke trying to remove the cam cap. 2 of the other bolts almost did the same thing but i was able to get them out with out breaking them. i think the bolts had some rust on it. think how i feel 2 heads w/broken bolts is frustrating. at least my new head has some bolt to grab onto. that is why i want some good bolts so i can feel more confident with them

I broke one of the same bolts last night... but I had spares. Just thought you'd get a laugh since I'd never had one break.

ok youdont need to buy cyl heads when you break bolts ... drill and hilicoil .. and before you install the bolts, look at each on and make sure the treads are not stretched cuz they will pull off .. and check for cracks or even the slightist twist cuz they will break... also for the bolts oil is good and you can even use a very little lube.. also just remembered also chase the threads on the bolt with a die and chase the hole threads with a tap, any burrs in the threads will make you snag and then you can ruin the threads where you will need to drill and hilicoil and or break a bolt with out realising because your tightining the bolt and real quike it binds and the torque your already apllying is like what is in motion stays in motion lol... so anyways yeah make sure you have no burrs in the threads ...
a 86 is an 86 no mater.
