If you've found the random on/off issue cause to be wires shorting from broken/cut insulation from firewall damage, do you think that the terminal bright lights issue could come from the same source? Say, maybe the ground wire to the brights is exposed and grounded so the lights see that as a switch left in the 'on' position?

Wow..... didn't look at the date on the thread until after the post I just made. I'm going to assume you fixed the prob long ago.
