My car doesn't idle right thread

Post by BlackStar »

Stock idle for my car is supposed to be 800 rpm(toyota 4ac), yet it prefers 1000. I have checked for leaks, and there are none. All new vacuum hosing. Vacuum hosing is in its correct locations. i have played with the idle screw, yet 1000 is the lowest it will go. I have cleaned out the carburetor. I have correct ignition timing. I am quite lost lol.
I tried to set the throttle positioner, in hopes that would fix it. I turned the TP screw till i had 1400rpms, and reconnected the hoses, but the car never idled down. Something related there? One though i had was turning in the main idle screw all the way in, start the car, and then turn it out slowly in hopes that it will be at the right idle, sort of like resetting itself. Any other thoughts? I would hate to have to give up and have a shop to the adjustments, but it just wont go down, and this is the last thing preventing me from getting smogged(and to set a few other things.)

Another thought, is the fast idle screw supposed to be screwed all the way in, just though about it because i noticed it.

Depending on which screw it is on the factory carburetor (I've never spent much time with them because they weren't ever in the cars long enough for me to bother with) that is the idle speed screw, try turning that out until it's no longer touching the throttle level. What should happen is the engine should do because you've completely choked out the carburetor: you've shut the butterflies completely. If that occurs, then turn in the idle speed screw until it just makes contact. After it makes contact, turn it in 1.5 turns (one complete turn and one half). Then start her up and see how she idles.

You can also let it idle and spray brake cleaner around the hoses and any gasket area. If there is a small leak you will tell as soon as the engine sucks it in. Then focus on that area for the location of the leak. I know you said you check but a 200 rpm change would be a VERY small leak.

is your throttle cable too tight preventing the throttle from closing all the way? your engine should idle with the throttle cable disconnected.

I'm afraid of doing that. Not because of the car exploding or something, but because it would mean I installed something wrong :( I know the carb isnt down to spec, but when I tried to, it ripped out the threads on the intake manifold(I did learn to helicoil a hole though  ). Maybe my torque wrench is getting out of spec, the metal is super soft, or it was already tight enough. Just makes me nervous. I hope its just a vacuum line, i'll give it a go.
