Need tips: Broken Crank Key and Front Main Seal

Post by mandm177 »

Any ideas on how to get a broken crank key out? half of it is still lodged in the crank, and i have NO clue how to get it out. i cant get under it from the front, and there's no room on the back. there's a tiny bit on the sides that i can barely get with pliers, but nothing solid.

Also, any tips on how to take out the front main seal?

as for the seal a pick will do the trick. you can try the heating and cooling method but i highly doubt it will work. what i told you on the phone is what i would do and if that didnt work the crank is coming out

got the seal done today. bought a chisel from harbor freight, and i'll be trying that in the next couple of days.

dont tear up the crank. slowly work a notch in the keyway till you can get a stable hit on it.soak it in penatrating lube. the crank pulleys off right?the timing chain gear too?

Get something like Kroil or equivalent. gets into spots as tight as 1/1,000,000".

You could always weld something sturdy to the exposed key piece and work it out from there.

Since I assume you have a new seal, just pry (like it has been said) or you can drill some wood screws into the seal and pull it out that way... Or atleast that's how we did mine on my volvo. :D
