Outside of the factory distributors and ecu, the GM HEI ignition modules appear to deliver the appropriate signal as well to register on the AE86 tachometers.
This is a 9K tach lifted out of an AE82 FX16 gauge cluster (face plate and mech) and fitted into an SR5 gauge cluster. Even though it's a non native motor, other brand motor the ignition is distributor triggered using HEI ignition modules pulling the tach signal from the negative of one of the coils.
Engine: 12A
Ignition configuration: 2 Leading coils + 2 HEI ignitors & 1 Trailing coil + 1 HEI ignitor pulling tach signal from negative of Trailing coil
Trigger: Leading VR sensor & Trailing VR sensor in distributor w/ mechanical advance (vacuum advance capable but not employed)
