homemade dropvent hood and widebody fenders..lol

Post by joshiroku »

well the engine temps were thinking about creeping up at texas world last month with the long straights and high average speeds, so i looked at some drop vent hood options.

i really like the uras hood and just the standard dropvent carbon but i has no cash for that!! and since i damaged my oem vis carbon hood i thought id just buy the uras copy vent and cut a hole for it and rivet it in...well that cost money too..
so thought id just make one myself...

first step...cut a big ass hole in the hood

then using some foam poster board and a razor i built a scale template to turn into an aluminum hood vent that i will rivet on when its done

i used straight pins to hold it all together and get the vent angles right...no science involved, just did it the way i liked.

on the fenders i stole an image from a blog called nori yaro...there was a screensaver with a little blue levin that had some dished work equips and this little fender mod that i just could not get outta my head (thanks alot damn internet).. any way here a series of pics from the finished product

good work josh. yes, the over fender mod was popularized by hibino (he's not the only one but with his notoriety...)

josh, check out weir performance's axle upgrades that use the 86 housing. they say the axles (w/spool) will hold up to 300+ hp.

thanks for the heads up, ive actually spoken with spence a few times and purchased the 3.90 gearset and crushsleeve thats in my current thirdmember...unfortunately i could not afford to have him setup the diff and i fear that the used bearings i didnt change when i reassembled the diff may have had a failure and that might explain the noises (lesson learned)...however it was quiet and noise free days before the track event and even some dyno runs, so i may not have screwed up the assembly part..

fortunately i purchased a thirdmember from mandm177 in the for sale section to get me to the next event while i scrape more funds together...thanks mark

also the spool wont work for me, i dont really care for the handling characteristics of full lock ..im old...and i like to drive my car on the street.
spence can use an aftermarket lsd for his modified axles but not a factory lsd..this adds a good chunk of coin to the conversion since used trd 2ways are like $450..ouch

ill get there eventually...lol

the celica supra rear axle housing may be a cheaper solution for me because im going to flare the car out to use the larger 225/45/15 NT01 tires, since the rear end is wider it might help with my wheel options

i know that weir offers an option to run an aftermarket LSD with their axles as well if you prefer. anyway, hope you find what you settle on.

wow josh, that takes guts man. good turnout though!

i might be able to help you with that diff install. i have assembled a few, including the one in my car which i finally tested at the track this last week end. we can always work out a deal with spare parts.

no prob, man. in that case the issue was probably caused by something else. did you install a solid pinion spacer? between the pinion flange and the bearing there is a washer with rounded out edges that if installed upside down will throw out the preload and destroy thst bearing in maybe just a hunded miles of normal driving. i have come across one with this issue. owner said it was running just fine at first.

yah i put a solid spacer in it, but i i didnt change the pinion bearing so thats why i was thinking bearing failure..i just pulled the complete lsd from my thirdmember, swapped the ring gear and put it in the pumpkin that spence sent me..thats what i get for being cheap!!

after seeing a pic of the weir axle face to face with the oem axles, i pretty much know ill not have these problems if i spend the coin on the good stuff....it just hurts damnitt!!
