First time I've seen that mod on an 86. They do similar things like that on midget, circle track cars but with holes rather than slotted. Less chance of slip.

I did the same thing years ago with my AE86,the rear roll center is located at the height the panhard crosses the diff centerline(side to side centerline btw) and what happens with a lowered corolla is the front RC gets lower(talking relative to the ground) and the rear doesn't change much so this causes a steeper sloped roll axis inclination.Combined with the solid rear the result is the tail happy car we all love, great but if your goal is faster your stuck tuning the car to work with the max grip the rear has.
If the rear RC is lowered it reduces the amount of weight transfered off the inside tire and onto the outside, since tire grip is non linear to the weight placed on it(it gets worse with more weight)its an improvement to keep both tires contributing instead of one tire being over loaded and one nearly off the ground(which is another factor with 4 link binding)
I found an improvement with mine and that was after a fully heim jointed equal length 3 bar set-up was sorted, mines not quite as pretty as that one above but I wasn't quite sure it would work so I didn't invest too much time into it in case it sucked and had to be removed.

Yes they were custom, not hard to build at all-simply fit to the lower control arm mount as you can see and then run up along the frame rail to nearly the firewall and welded tabs from the tube to the chassis to increase rigidity. It was one of the 1st things I did to the car actually with the reputation for chassis weakness.
Sorry no other pics of them.

Look on rhdjapan.com they have a watts link set up that does the same thing without the major mods.... its the same idea on a live axel mustang.... if you make the rear end plant itself better you get more traction and it takes away the wheel hop and keeps rear end planted.
