ok so i bought a manual steering rack and it came with a complete manual rack out of an ae86 and the longer section from the manual column and the u joint. is there a way to get the column apart so i can swap in the manual parts? i cant seem to get the aluminum piece with the key off. Is there some sort of trick to it or is it just being stubborn? I do have the mr2 u joint and mk3 soop shaft but i would rather use the ae86 manual stuff. any help, advise or links would be apreciated. thanks

talking about this little guy? I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to as well... since you stated you have the mr2 u-joing and the mk3 shaft.... aluminum piece with the key off... like right behind the steering wheel?

chris you are exactly correct.

I have the piece circled in red from a manual column. the aluminum piece behind the wheel has 3 bolts that bolt it to the column housing. i cant get those apart. or do i need to take off the 2 bolts from the bearing at the base of the column?

What i was saying is if no one can help me then i will just use my mr2/soop intermidiate shaft and u joint. sorry for any confusion.

ok here are the pics.
the top is my power column. the lower part is the part from a manual column. i want to install that onto my column if it is possible. i dont know if i need to remove the top piece where my key and steering wheel go to or if i need to remove it from the bottom.

ok after some investigating i found out that the bottom pic is from the mk3 soop. the seller just didnt remove the half shaft. but now i have like 3 or 4 u joints. one is probably from the soop i hope one is from the manual corolla and one is longer then the rest

Sean, the spline bottom piece should slide right off.

I just did this a few months ago. get a propane torch and heat it up. There's some rubber inside there, and that helps hold it/minimize vibrations etc.

Then you could use a Pair of channel lock pliers or something similiar of the sorts to grab on the areas where there is no splines and wiggle it out. I had recieved my mkiii shaft already out. So all I had to do was pull the power steering shaft out of my column. I ended up destroying the power steering u-joint.... mainly because I didn't know the rubber was inside there. So after applying heat... it came out fairly easy. Also putting a little heat the it going back in makes things a world easier as well.

i got it out of the old part and in to my column now its just adjusting the length. it is a lot easier then expected...for mine anyways. i was able to get it out with just a hammer. iv heard people taking up to 5 hours to get the ishaft out. it took me not even 10 minutes. I am having a bit of an issue getting the length right. i removed my column and i cant bolt it up due to the length. ill get it in prolly tomorrow

Did you get the length needed? I put the rack in and the column and wiggled the shaft down while applying a little heat to it. not a lot due to the fact there's the rubber boot thing that goes around the column. This is also probably how it got "off center" for me, and the fact that it was like 2-3 a.m. I haven't had any issues with mine since.
