i used to say the same thing. when i built my first 16v 4age, it was awesome. everyone was like dude for the same $ could have had any motor in the car, but i wanted to keep it toyota.mooreofit wrote:looks excellent. i cant say i'm a fan of swaps outside the maker but i can appreciate the work. i hope you stay problem free but i can see you going through tire's.
then.................. i got into serious drifting. and really a 4age cant hold up. look at taka aono. hes one of the only really doing great with a formula atlantic 16v, but again its not the best, and he has sponsers haha.
trouble free hahahaha yeah right! its a corolla, and its a nissan combine. its asking for death.

wiring is pretty much crazy custom. i did it the easy way i would call it, but again i dont have a key or anything to start the car. sooooo, wiring it up to run with a key, and stuff will require some more wiring and work.
if your going to swap, suggestion: ca18s are OLD. tear the motor down and rebuild, at minimum put a gasket set in it, rings and bearings. second, exhaust is a fun one, i know your using a ca18de so im asuming no turbo, which then again poses the issue of the manifold. MIGHT need to use a ca18det turbo manifold and make a down pipe. when you swap a ka24de into a ae86 you use a turbo manifold and a crazy down pipe.
third will be mounts. i opted to use stock 4age cusco mounts, and make custom brackets from the motor to the cusco mounts, the easier way would be to cut the mounts off the cross member move them and reweld them. using stock ca18det mounts and all.
next will be needing a custom one piece driveline, cutting the shifter hole ect.
HONESTLY the ca18de isnt much if any better then a 4age. hell the ca18det isnt even an awesome motor. i THOUGHT i could do the swap for decently cheap, like under 2k but that went out the window after i bought the first motor. so take all that into consideration haha, and if you need some help let me know, if i can get a second ae86 shell SOON, i can mock up and fabricate the same mounts im using. i could easily replicate them and sell them.
Yeah, I was in the process of building a 4AGE, but the unused CA seemed like too much eye candy to turn down. My dad bought the engine about 6 years ago from a kid in California. He bought it really cheap as well, for roughly 300-600. The kids mom made him sell it. When we got the engine back to San Antonio, we found that the individual who owned the vehicle housing the motor in Japan, had to have wrecked it mere moments after driving off the lot. The entire engine, including the electrical components such as the alternator, CAS, etc are brand new without wear marks. The cams look like they are brand new out of the box. If I didn't know the engine had been started I would say it was a brand new crate motor. I'll take some photos. We're probably going to pull the pan tomorrow or Monday and get a thorough inspection of the block. Everything has nearly new factory sealant, gaskets, etc. So unless the engine was rebuilt at a dealership, reconditioned, installed, wrecked, and the clip was sent to the states I'm not too sure what to think.
If you ever want some ideas for the CA, check out boost_boy on the NICO forums. He's been building CAs for people for years. His Sentra's CA18DET was a crazy engine. He was drag racing his, doing regular 9000 RPM launches in a B13 sentra. He's built, installed, and tuned several CA swaps into S13s as well, and is more than helpful when it comes to wrenching on the CA. Here's some info on his cars in one of his posts: http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=400365&page=1
Here's some info on a build that used a CA20 block, crank, 4G63 1G big rods and B20 honda pistons (later upgraded to Wiseco pistons).

sounds like a good shape motor.
im pretty familiar with the ca18det, i have read a ton. thanks for the links! yeah, to a point putting a ca18 in a corolla is pretty much keeping the shell for a ca corolla. i mean you need to cut the shifter WAY back, and bang the crap out of the firewall to get it in as well. putting a 4age in would be easy but at the same time need to cover the shifter hole again, change some fuel system stuff, best way is to cut the hardline off, run soft hose to a Z32 filter, then from the filter to the rail.
good luck with the swap/

On my project car I was planning on redoing the fuel system any way. So the lines will be a natural progression of what I had intended. If anything it would make it easier to switch back to a 4age if I ever wanted to b/c I'll most likely set it up with -AN connections. I know I was talking with some aussies about the CA in an AE86 chassis and they recommended using an RB20 transmission with a CA bellhousing. That will keep the shifter in the stock location on the chassis. A little easier for them due to the availability of that transmission over there. I was going to take some measurements of different transmissions in the junkyard. I know the S12 "C" series transmissions are shorter than the S13 "C" series and both will bolt up with a CA bellhousing. I figure if I can get something close to the stock T-50 length it would simplify things a bit.
Even if I can't, the extra length wouldn't be too bad b/c I've always wanted the shifter to be about 4-6" more to the rear of stock. I was doing some research earlier and I read that the S12 "C" transmission positions the shifter much closer to stock though than the RB20 unit so we'll see what happens.

cool!
Im tall, so i sit pretty far back and SUPER low, so the shifter is in a great location for me. does kind of suck having to cut the chassis but i pretty much dont care about the shell lol.
time for a car wash tomorrow and im going to design a home depot lip and drop it down some more! I got a feature coming up for Felonyperformance.com
I just have to rock some big Felony Performance stickers and hes going to to a photo shoot next weekend!

well, took the car drifting. it was fun. power in a corolla is INSANE. and i thought having 150whp in an NA 4age was fun, HOLY crap 250whp is AWESOME.
it was so fun.
even got into some tandem battle damage!
we hit fender to fender, no major damage, little dent in the fender and he had fiberglass ones so it cracked. nothing big.
