i'm surprised you hadn't already. maybe ask them if anyone's ever asked for the RPM bypass and if they've done it?

But remember you still have to have a CAT, its a safety item. However if the cat is drilled out an inspector may never now, when he looks under the car he sees the shell of a CAT. wink wink nudge nudge, hint hint tip of the hat ;)

Well two things, Emission items are inspected on cars 68 and newer. However if the car is 84 and older and was not produced with a cat from factory then it is not required. Or most likely is that inspector is just lazy and doesn't look under the car. My bet is #2

16vHachi, Abilene is a Safety only county, so your luck ass doesn't need to do emission testing. All of us here in the Major cities have Safety and emission testing. Thus the 39.75 we are charged. Most of Texas counties are a safety only. The Safety and Emission Testing counties are Dallas, Denton, Collin, Harris, Tarrant, Parker, Johnson, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, Galveston, Montgomery, Ft Bend, Brazoria,Travis, Williamson, and El Paso. *note, The guys in Austin are finding inspections bring in lots of money. There used to be only five emission counties but each year it seems like they are adding another county.*

Now for the rest of you guys who have to do emission testing. There are three ways it is done.
Cars 96 and newer have to pass an OBDII test. Witch is pretty much plug the state machine into the OBD port on the car. Turn the car on and let it idle. The computer does the rest. As long as your check engine light is one and your drive cycle is complete you should have no prob passing this.

The next is the more Popular ASM test For cars 95-86(it will be 87 next year) Here they put the car on a dyno and stick a sniffer up the tail pipe. Run the car at 15MPH and the at 25MPH.

The last way to test is the TSI, Two-Speed Idle, This is saved for AWD and heavy heavy trucks that cant fit on a dyno. Same principle, stick a sniffer up the tail pipe but in revving the motor at high and low speeds. Now for some reason the counties of El Paso, Williamson, and Travis are only a TSI testing county. The rest of us emission counties are the ASM, Both are OBD for the newer cars.

Random Inspection fact: A vehicle does not need to have a windshield to pass, but has to have working wiper blades.

Another Random fact: When you fail an Inspection you still have to pay for it, but you get 15 days to come back for a free re-inspection. The 15 days are days the shop is open, so if a shop is closed Sunday those days dont count.

I guess ok pretty lucky! Lol
Can't you guys drive out of town (if it's close)
To a saftey inspection only place and get it done there instead of doing the whole 9 yards??
