Rebuild 16v or go 20v???
Ok, I got a MINT condition GTS with a blown 4age. The car literally has about 67k miles, but the oil pan was damaged and ended up draining the oil. the lady I bought the car from had no clue until after the engine started to knock... So my question is, should I re-build the 16v or just swap in a 20v silver top. What all do I need to for the 20v?? or where can I get the 16v rebuilt?? Anyone have a good 16v motor?? lol

I would stay with the 16 valve. If you dont know how to rebuild it take it to thunder bolt and let them. I have had the black top 20v in one of my old 86's and I like the 16 valve better.

Firstly, if you're going to have to ask what it's going to take to put a MAF based AE101 motor into the car, then I think the answer should be pretty much out of the question since it's not a straight forward drop in. You'll need, among other things, lots of ancillary parts like a dizzy and waterline relocation kit (if you like your engine bay clean like me) and that's going to run you about $1100 - $1200 in addition to the motor itself. Additionally, most Silvertops would yield you approx 115 - 120WHP, and this would be running AE111 electronics that would support the open ITB setup. Note that a stock 16V with mild 264/256 cams, header and exhaust alone would get you about the same.
Now you've got a blown 4AGE; cost to get a high comp motor and drop it in? I would reckon it would be less than $1100 if you did it yourself, to say nothing of taking that $1100 and rebuilding the motor with OE OS pistons, mild cams and using the new DIYPNP MS based ECU for some really good gains, which would put you squarely into the AE111 swap territory.

damn good numbers out of a 16v.if you get a set of cops and run them off the stock igf signal you can delete the cap and you wont need a dizzy. also there is a 20v waterline writeup here to do it basically for cost of materials.

The highest we got was to about 167WHP on a smallport 16V I think. That was a built 16V with TODA / Toyota OE everything and a Vi-PEC standalone EMS. Impressive till 9.5k RPM. I've seen the COP mods, and if you price out new coils, that would be about the same price as the dizzy relocation kit. The time involved in John's waterline mod would probably cost me about the same as a T3 dizzy relocation kit, plus there's reputedly a cheaper one on the way, hence why I just get the parts instead (for my customers) as they're going to have to pay if they're not going to do it themselves. But I digress.
How good am I @ MS? Hmmmm. I think I'm an adequate MS tuner, and basic wiring stuff, and I advocate the new DIYPNP units... but the older > V1PCB3.0 I'm not too fond of, primarily because of the EDIS wheel setup. Why?

well bob i would have to say junkyard on the cops and look through the 20v section and you will see the other waterline plan. not the prettiest but effective none the less.
on the ms im running a v3.57 with msextra. i had diy autotune assemble the unit for me and i wired it in got it started and running with a 36-1 wheel in distributor generic wheel mode. i tried on the 4afe dizzy vr sensors but could not get a good rpm signal due to noise. what i had problems with is a hesitation when i stabbed the throttle and an rpm spike during hard acceleration that would cause the car to buck and surge. also when i tried to adjust acceleration enrichment it made no change to the effect on stabbing the throttle. it was like it didnt work at all. through all this ive been dealing with matt and his patience has no limit.i have nothing but great things to say.well it came down to taking it off the car about a six months ago and i plan on sending it back to them so they can look at it. i have also got a complete edis setup i plan on running it on the ae86 for more turbo clearance. i know i could go other routes to achieve the same results but the reliability seems to be pretty good with the edis setup. so whats your beef with the setup? i am an avid hater of ford products and i really hate to use it. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
