i don't have any personal experience with phantom grip but had heard of them around turn of the century. i hear both good and bad from different people in the FWD & RWD communities.

so how does this compare to a 2 way lsd? my friend had a 2 way lsd in his car and and when you would pull in and out of parking spaces and small places the tires would fight each other and cherp. would this be like a 2 way but without the cherping?dr.occa wrote:go here.

stock comes with a 1 way and they dont make it for the gts if i am not mistaken. its the same thing as a welded just buy an open diff and lock it up and itl give you the same effect cheap easy and no rebuilds ;D. My axles were bent to shit on a stock lsd that wouldn't even grab and i never hit anything. you can bend your axles with any diff theirs going to be stress on your rear end and other parts of the body because your making a car do something completley other than its meant for. if you want to try a full lock effect double check to see that they don't make it for the 86 or you could try a spool or welded diff. i did it because i am on a very very low budget go ahead and give it a try see if you like it.

actually, phantom grip has been around a loooooooong time. they've gotten mixed reviews i know but i've always wondered on the bad reviews who actually performed the install. you never get that side of the story.
anyway, if it were really that bad, phantom grip wouldn't still be around. lots of pro-amateur auto-x and fwd dragsters seem fond of the p-grip.
2-way locks in both directions: acceleration and deceleration providing better control and response on both ends of the spectrum of "to-the-limit" driving. a kaaz 2 way acts a lot like a welded. factory gts lsd is 1 way.

so whats your stance on the phantom grip diff? not for an 86 but maybe for a mr2? or even for an 86.dr.occa wrote:actually, phantom grip has been around a loooooooong time. they've gotten mixed reviews i know but i've always wondered on the bad reviews who actually performed the install. you never get that side of the story.

honestly speaking, it's more expensive than welding. money's the problem. i haven't found anyone in the 86 community who has opted for it even though it's available for all years of corollas (according to Phantom Grip's information). the welded diff is tried and for many (but not all) true. welded is also cheaply attainable. for the price Phantom Grip is asking for their "lsd" kit plus the upgraded springs (i'd recommend it for those who insist on seeing the roads through either driver or passenger windows) you can't blame 86 owners to opt for a factory lsd with a rebuild.landslideATX wrote:so whats your stance on the phantom grip diff? not for an 86 but maybe for a mr2? or even for an 86.
i'd say this, if anyone is interested in getting 35 86 enthusiasts to donate $10, we'll order the Phantom Grip and upgrade springs and give it to a "lucky" 86garage.com member with an open diff to test drive it. we'll then report our findings and write a review.
what does everyone think?
donations can be taken from non-86 owners as well.
if everyone thinks it's a good idea than i'll start a Phantom Grip Experiment Donation thread and provide a paypal account to send it to. we'll post up ALL donation information and Experiment project status.
chime in everyone.

or we can just let my friend with the mr2 get it and try it out and see how it works and if it is worth it. oh yeah does the 87 mr2 aw11 come with lsd? my friend did a burn out and it left two marks. but he says it kind of stops drifting. like he can feel it stop drifting when going around a curve. so i'm guessing he has a 1 way.dr.occa wrote:honestly speaking, it's more expensive than welding. money's the problem. i haven't found anyone in the 86 community who has opted for it even though it's available for all years of corollas (according to Phantom Grip's information). the welded diff is tried and for many (but not all) true. welded is also cheaply attainable. for the price Phantom Grip is asking for their "lsd" kit plus the upgraded springs (i'd recommend it for those who insist on seeing the roads through either driver or passenger windows) you can't blame 86 owners to opt for a factory lsd with a rebuild.landslideATX wrote:so whats your stance on the phantom grip diff? not for an 86 but maybe for a mr2? or even for an 86.

i can't say that ALL aw11's are LSD equipped with any confidence. but whether it's a 1 way or above lsd, it should still take you around the corners sideways unless it's worn out.landslideATX wrote:...oh yeah does the 87 mr2 aw11 come with lsd? my friend did a burn out and it left two marks. but he says it kind of stops drifting. like he can feel it stop drifting when going around a curve. so i'm guessing he has a 1 way.
