So let’s keep the built of this up to date. Decided to build a new engine, a 7AGE. After lot's of reading and searching I just pulled the 4AGE out of my AE86 because I’ll need lots of parts from it to get the 7AGE done.
To start with, here’s the 7AFE from a 90’s Carina:
Image
Not that much is needed for the build. Engine block, crank, flywheel and some minor bits. Here’s the block re-bored to 81.5mm and ready to receive a bit of paint.
Image
Some more parts. Lightened and balanced crank, forged rods, ARP bolts, Wiseco 4AGE pistons, new oil pump, new bearings,…

Crank, rods and pistons mounted

7AFE oil pan. Slightly larger than the 4AGE pan

To avoid oil accumulation in the cylinder head I fabricated an oil return line. Just like on the smallport engines.

New OEM head bolts to mount the head

And than started with the timing of the new camshafts. Chose some Kelford. 282 / 278 deg with T3 adjustable pulleys.
Image
Image
Took me quite some time to get them spot on the timing specs provided by Kelford.

New engine, new valve covers. Before:

after:

Got the last missing piece to complete the engine, Exedy stage 2 212mm:

A few hours later, it all resulted in this:

After a quick timing adjustment and the sucker started right up! Now I'll have to finish the car and drive a few break-in miles before I'll get the Haltech ECU mapped. Little vid for all you open trumpets lovers:

Thanks man. Sound resulted in power ;-)

Tuesday was dyno mapping day. Alarm rang at 5:30 in the morning, started the TomTom and off we went. Destination KWL Motorsport in Leverkusen/Germany. The only good thing of leaving early are empty roads and gorgeous lighting!

Image

After 3 hours of exhaust, ITB and differential noises I eventually arrived. Changed the rear tires, setup the car on the dyno, connected O2 sensors, laptops,…

Image

KWL Motorsport is a kind of old school race prepping garage. They do a lot of old VWs, Kugelfischer injections,… So while letting the boss do his things to my fuel and ignition maps, I studied their race cars. Audi 50, VW Polo Derby and 2 Scriroccos

Image

A few hours, coffees and chats later I changed the rear wheels again and drove home. What a difference! Engine runs great, way more torque than before,…

Image

So, what everyone is waiting for, the results.

108kW / 147cv at the wheels
Min 85% of torque from 3500 to 7500 RPM
127kW / 173 CV at the flywheel.

Here they are, compared to my previous engines, the modified 4AGE and the modified 20V I killed early 2010
