parting out my engine
Re: parting out my engine
audi 2.8l bi-turbo. all aluminum. forged everything right from the factory. basically the only thing this motor needs to make 1000hp is a bw s400 and the fuel system to support it. as far as tranny's go i dunno.
if you wanted to be slick the all aluminum xr6 turbo motor is pretty sick and aussie made ford product.
yes i would rather see you put a ford motor in the corolla then a honda motor.
theres a couple of newer gm 4cylinders that are boosted and make close to 250hp.
actually the cobalt ss supercharged is a really good motor and if you plan on racing the responsiveness of the roots type charger is awesome.
but all being said i really think the ls1 is the ONLY viable swap to an ae86 besides the origional 4ag.
reasons, you can get a motor for 350 bucks from lkq. cam it and put an intake on it and you are over 400 hp. cam 400 bucks ls6 intake 150 bucks. now you need a tranny the nv3500 is a truck tranny but so is the w series trannys. they can be had for 400 bucks from your local lkq. you cant do that with a 1uz. try getting a set of cams for 400 bucks. and you start with 50 hp more than the 1uz.and parts are way cheaper for the ls series.
as far as the f20c goes its gay.

Not to be abrasive, but I would like to know where you are getting your figures from? An LS motor for $350? Seriously? What are you going to do about engine management? Instruments? Without the ECU and harness you are going to have problems. A good cam is going to run you more than that, unless you are using a secondhand one. Then, you have to consider whether you are going to need upgraded lifters/springs to accommodate the cam profile. You are about right on the LS6 intake pricing. What about injector costs? Don't forget the headers and custom exhaust you'll need if you want to free bottled up horsepower. Longtube headers are going to run you upwards of $700 and a custom exhaust is going to be an additional $300. Not to mention, unless you are a pretty handy fabricator, all the mounting hardware you are going to need to fasten this motor is not free either.mooreofit wrote:...but all being said i really think the ls1 is the ONLY viable swap to an ae86 besides the origional 4ag.

Whenever anyone talks about an LSx swap, they need to be thinking $5k~$8k IMO, that is, if you want legitimate parts and a quality tune. That's the kind of money you can expect to spend. I have seen time and time again in the Nissan community that people expect to only spend $2k~$3k for their V8 swap and end up spending triple that amount.
Don't get me wrong. I like seeing quality LSx builds in imports. They are sick. But it doesn't take a lot of imagination to do one. On the other hand, dropping a rare motor, or just something completely different from mainstream (say something like a screaming 13B?) into an AE86 gets mad props from me.

the audi engine is expensive, awd only and i am not a fan of v6 engines, also, don't really want to go turbo. same with the xr6 plus don't want to go though the hassle of parts availability.
cobalt supercharged 205hp that is less than the na f20c! plus it is heavier and uses the h3 transmission
ls1 is expensive and at least 200lbs heavier than 4age!
other than the f20c being a homosexual it seems like the best engine

homo's are cool sometimes as long as they leave me alone.
when i say ls1 i mean the whole gen 3 family. 5.3 5.7 6.0. yes the iron block version is 60#'s heavier than the alluminum version but its loads cheaper.
the gen 3 family are the exact same motor meaning everything is modular. the 5.7 has slightly more bore and stroke than the 5.3 but you can bore the 5.3 out to use the 5.7 pistons. the heads might be different but the 5.3 heads are slightly better than the ls1 heads. the truck intakes suck. use the ls1.
as for the cam a comp thumper cam needs no valvetrain upgrade. not unless you plan on revving it out further and springs and a timing chain and your good.this cam is 400 bucks......
super chevy did an artical where they took a bone stock 5.3 from the junkyard put the edelbrock intake and carb on it hei and put down 330 some hp at the flywheel. then put just this one camshaft in with NO other mods and pulled 94 CHP! the heads are so good the bolted a set of aftermarket high flow heads and only gained 10hp with the above mods.all in all the motor ended up making 430 somthing hp.
if you really want that alluminum block the L33 and a couple others can be had for as cheap as 500 bucks from car-parts.
the 5.3 can be had for 350 bucks at tkq. think outside th ebox to save some money. the ln7 makes 10 hp less than the ls1 but the l33 makes a little more than the ls1. same power same engine a third of the cost.

haha i don't wanna stick my nose in anyones business but my opinion is keep it japanese lol trash the american stuff
f20c sounds like the best idea although im not a honda person but they have been proven to be very fast in the 86' and fun for that matter
at the end of the day it's your car so your decision
have fun with it

Re: parting out my engine
as far as the harness is conserned the pick a part is pretty cheap and i have hptuners so need for any aftermarket engine management just another ecu.
as far as the headers are consurned a truck manifold set would probably fit in the 86 as the its a narrower engine than the 1uz and and only one pipe needs to be modded to clear the column.i do agree that headers are expensive for the ls series engines if you want good ones. but these will actually make power unlike the 4ag headers and i see reason for the price increase.
all in all it will cost a couple gs to get it in once you buy the motor trans good clutch axle's and all the little b.s. that goes with the swap. this is all diy though but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to weld up some motor mounts.AALLLLLLL of wich your going to have to do for an f20c swap or pay someone to do it all the same as the ls1 swap.
price about the same
i think the benifit goes to the ls motors more power and cheaper to obtain than the f20c.
art none of this is directed towards you.

Re: parting out my engine
so the 4age with tranny in full trim a/c compressor and all is only 300#s?
also the t56 weighs a ton. an m22 would drop some of that 500 pounds.

Re: parting out my engine
it is my track car, i use it for time trials.
no power steering no a/c with t50 about 360lbs.
about 430lbs for the ls1 plus 85lbs from the m22 which is a 4-speed. that is 515 and that doesn't include clutch assembly and flywheel.

Re: parting out my engine
i get 460 or so with the auto bolted to it and 505 with the t56.i know the t56 is heavier than the m22. easily 50 pounds.
ive never weighed one so i wouldnt know for sure.
that doesnt mean you shouldnt boost.
3sgte with a whipple 100ax or anything with a whipple. the only thing better than a turbo. instant power all the way to redline.

Re: parting out my engine
ah a track car well in that case i guess go all out if you must you could always put a decent amount of $$ into a 4age and make it pretty rediculous for boost im not so big on the "bigger is better" in the motor sense but it's your car do what you want and good luck i hope something works out for ya

i'm glad you are the one to buy it. pradoart@gmail.com
i own a 3sgte engine out of a 1st gen alltrac. it is a heavy engine though and probably harder to swap into the ae86 than the f22
