Are they on at idle?

If so, try jiggling the alternator plug wiring and see if it goes on/off. Also check the fatter main wires to the battery and see if the nut that holds them to the charging post came loose.

only time it happens is when i'm cruising at a steady speed.....

then when you let off/get on throttle it goes off

i'll check the wiring though to the alt/battery

Yeah, the first thing I'd suspect is what Andrew pointed out. When ever that warning light comes on, it's usually indicative of your charging system having issues e.g. wiring short(s) due to loss of insulation, oxidation or breaks. You may have bad or old fuses/relays contributing to pre-mature charging shortfalls, etc...

I know your setup is a full GTS harness (engine, dash, cabin and rear) but have you had to do any "repairs" or modifications that may be contributing to the problem e.g. jury-rigged wiring as a quick fix for any ecu issues, etc...? I'd look at those as well.

Usually when the alternator goes it's the brushes or voltage regulator in it... if your feeling frugal you can grab these from many other toyota's at the junkyard and swap them in. Then take the alt to a parts store and test it to make sure it works.

So this is happening with the new alt? Was it the same problem with the old one? If so it's probably not an alternator problem, and sounds more like a wiring issue. These cars are old, even though the wires are in tact, they're could be a lot of resistance in them. Check all the wiring real carefully, make sure you've got solid connections and good grounds. Replace a few if you need to. Fresh wiring never hurts lol
