New-ish AE86 owner

Post by Lauren »

Now, I've wanted one of these since I was about 14 (1983!) and funnily enough back in somewhere in 2005. I was at a DW day at Silverstone. I got to know Kenny and Ian G and Ian, kindly let me drive his AE86. This was the first time I'd ever been in an AE86 so naturally I had a go at drifting it:

That was 6 odd years ago, so I finally thought I ought to get round to owning one of my dream cars. So, I found a 1985 Trueno in typical panda colours and took the plunge.

This is my daily car, I use it for my job and claim mileage in it. So, the car has to be streetable and is complete with working aircon and power steering. I tried a 20v Levin with a manual rack but it was too much for my weedy girly arms.

Though I have been to a few DW days back in 2005, I'm perhaps better known for trackdays, having done them everywhere for ten years now. I used to work for a trackday company, so I got some good opportunities.

The plan for the car is to restore it to it's former glory, leave the exterior stock and keep the mods nice and subtle.

Anyways, here are some pics of when I got the car back in March this year:

Spec is HKS 264s with verniers, RCA's, TRD blue dampers and springs all round, 4-1 manifold with Tanabe Medallion cat back system. Also has a 2 way TRD so I was told by the sller. I've added a K&N also.

Interior is stock, apart from Bride seat and my old suede Sparco wheel (back from the MR2 days) that I've added.

HKS verniers:

It's got some weird aftermarket daughter board which is causing a flat spot to appear (from throwing up error codes) on a weekly basis, so need to try and work out what to do with that.

Jobs done so far:
New discs and pads (well still awaiting front pads)
Rebuilt brake master cylinder
Various new interior bits from Toyota.
Also replaced the damaged wheel arch extension with a new one again from Toyota.

Car is off to bodyshop on 23rd May to get all the minor cosmetics sorted as well as treating any rust. Then it will be off to chassis clean in Cheshire for a full underseal treatment and Dinitrol everywhere.

I've got a DW Oil Cooler kit to fit as the car makes it's track debut on the 18th June at Anglesey, so trying to get as much done as possible by then.

Will also look at doing some drift days, once it's ready. :)

One thing I do need to find is some cool retro wheels, I'll keep the originals, but reckon some Work Equips would do the trick.

Thought I'd struck gold with these decals:

But though they are replacement parts for the AE86, they are in fact for an AE92 Trueno. Waited a month for them to come all the way from Japan as well. Never mind!
