Re: ***Official 86 Day 2011***
Well, here's a short recap of the 8/6 2011 weekend.
My son and I arrived in Austin Friday afternoon and checked in to the Double Tree at University Place
Had a couple of drinks and some Fish & Chips at the bar downstairs waiting for those who may show up (no luck).
Later met up with Thaison at the Pho Thaison location in Lakeway and grabbed a late dinner time snack for the kiddo.
Went to fill up at the Shell just down the street and friendly lady took an interest in Thaison's Mad Max machine and started taking pics and tried to pic our buddy Thaison up. She settled for a hug from him. Thaison's a nice guy man; Didn't give her any disrespect and actually answered her small talk questions like a gentleman
Thaison lead the way through the winding roads of 620 to the dam pass late that night. Quite a fun jaunt back to the Hotel where we pulled in under a parking lot light and performed a little day surgery procedure on his quad-stacked hi-comp. It would idle on its own at a stop without a little pedal coaxing. We grabbed my tools out of my ailing panda and went to work.
Thaison's ITB setup looks pretty minimalist with mainly just the stacks and bodies are highlighted. This is due to the fact that he decided to mount them upside down with the throttle wheel hidden. The idle up solenoid was removed so we had to adjust the 3 idle speed stops individually which were only accessible after removing the 16v fuel rail. After about 4 adjustments and tests we go it idling on its own at just around 1100.
Met up for some breakfast again with Thaison the next day at Mi Madres after checking out of the DT which was just a few blocks away.
Headed over to the Lakeway Pho Thaison location again to meet up with who ever would make it.
Nick, John, Pier, Carlos, Cailynn (I think I butchered her name), Branden & Gillian, Brian, Thaison, Joe & Erin, Dave & Veronica, My son & I showed up and had some great Vietnamese food and some great freshly made Sushi served up by Mr. Thaison's dad himself.
Afterwards, I gave out some shirts and stickers generously provided by Brent Picasso of AUTOSPORTLABS (the brainiacs behind the Megajolt Lite Jr and Race Capture) and limited series coupons donated by Sam Q from SQ Engineering (fabulous 20v 4AG components).
"I have silly children."
"Thaison's a great host. Each city should have a Thaison living in it."
Only had 3 AE86s in attendance and all 3 were Trueno hatches. Cailynn (I'm sorry if I'm murdering your name C) showed up for the drive in her A/T AW11 with an ill 4AG - soon to be outfitted with a 5spd BT 20v thanks to her loving husband Jonathon who had to work that day. Brian (EvilCerealBox) arrived with his Turbo intercooled Volvo wagon and sporting a creepy shirt with a Yao Ming decapitated zombie head on it . Thaison's friend Branden came in his EK. Dave (daveskatesallday) arrived in his red AE86 hatch also sporting a 16v hi-comp. Nick appeared a little past noon with friends and cousin John. His buddy Pier brought his yellow SW11 outfitted with a Beams 3SGE and his other buddy Carlos rode in on a 1st gen hard top miata heaving a turbo'd 04 1.8l. It was a short and sweet get together. I got to know a few of our members a little more personally: some of their history, plans for their 86s and ideas for future events and projects. Here are just a few pics from my droid that I took. We'll see more of y'all next time.
"Hatched"
"86s still look good to me even without fenders."
"The short conga line"
"Fueling up on San Antonio petrol"
"Fun drive to get to this lonely little donut practice spot"
