Thermowax replacment

Post by FujiwaraTofu »

Hey can anybody give me an idea as to how to replace the thermowax in the 4age engine?
I'm experiencing high idles along with an idle surge. I have already checked the tps, throttle body, ignition timing, and looked for any vacuum leaks, all of which were either fine or yielded no results once fixed. The only reason thermowax was concluded as the issue is that the t-vis stays fairly cool under running conditions even when I'm being slightly rough on the engine. Everything else besides that has checked out so far.

Has nothing to do with the tvis.

is it running rich? like black smoke out of the exhaust? and is there any other issues while driving the car or just issues at idle?

Nah. Just while it's idling. After driving some I noticed a pattern change.
When I start the car it idles low as in around 5-600. After the car is warm it idles at about 1250 and slowly creeps up to 1550 and as soon as it gets passed 1500 it surges and the rpms drop immediately to about 1100 then go right back to 1250 and that cycle repeats

Try bleeding your coolant system. Pull the radiator cap and let the car warm up. Slap the cap back on. For good measure, you can continue to let it idle and crack the bleed bolt open a little bit at a time until it has a steady stream (laminar) of coolant coming out. Be careful though. Remember that it's hot. Make sure to keep your overflow bottle filled to the line through the whole thing.

It may fix your idling issue.

Already tried that for different reasons, the coolant system needed to be flushed anyway do I flushed water through it a few times letting it heat up each time till the water looked murky and I'm probably going to flush the system again today cause it looks like shot in there again. One of the previous owners let the car sit there for 10 years

Edit: well I feel like an idiot. There is no thermowax in the 4age, and it's the maf sensor lol

wait doesn't the 4age still have thermowax for the idle up when it's cold? then when it gets warm it starts to soften/melt the wax dropping your idle down..... maybe I'm wrong on that?

i bet it is in the idle air control valve that is on the throttle body. those are notorious for causing idle hunting
