chasis stiffening

guys, how is the chasis for the AE86 hatch in general? being an 80s technology, i suppose it wont be as good as modern cars?

if yes, what is normally done that effectively improves this? prefer bolt ons.

Like most cars (even modern models) the 86 is primarily spot welded for cost savings. It's contingent on what your plans are for the car. If you want to maintain it for daily driving with some weekend warrior type events, then just some front strut tower braces, front fender braces and urethane bushings should be plenty.

If you'd like a more responsive setup closer to an ice cube sliding across linoleum then stitch welding is the way to go.

The only thing stitch welding does is freshen up an old chassis. My personal opinion, stitch welding doesn't make a huge difference. Gussets and a solid cage will make the biggest improvement also if it's all out 2 part urethane foam. There used to be a video on YT of TRD showing you where and how to gusset you 86 on Tsuchiya San's personal car.

Stitch welding replaces the weaker "glued" joints where pieces start to separate when an increased amount and frequency of side g-forces are introduced along with varying elevations from road courses/uneven pavement coupled with sudden suspension compressions, rebound and transfers. Stitch welding most notably increases desirable chassis "twitch"/response. Too much coupled with a cage can make the car TOO twitchy. You're basically making the chassis as a whole respond rapidly rather than pieces "lagging" behind another due to give.
