Re: New86race car
So i am going to jump ahead i little bit the last weekend after the last picture in this thread was total chaos with almost no sleep to finish the car in time for long beach. At one point i worked for 40 hrs. straight through only stopping for food and water. So needless to say I don't have a lot of pictures of us finishing the car lol. We ended up finishing the car and putting it on the trailer at 8:30 am on Wednesday and we had to be in long beach at 10 am on Thursday... it was a pretty interesting drive without a whole lot of stops.
We ended up pulling up to the track at around 10:30 am and unloaded the car and headed to tech. Formula D tech is pretty in depth so i was nervous about passing but in the end the only thing we had to add was a driveshaft loop.
We got it installed and made it official. After finishing a few things up that we didn't have time to finish in Texas we headed to the hotel for the night. The next morning started with a drivers meeting explaining all the things the judges would be looking for. I had never driven the new car so i wasn’t sure what to expect heading into the one and only practice session.
On my first run in practice I decided to go for it on the straight knowing we would only get a few runs before qualifying. The car felt good in first and second but when i shifted to third I had a massive boost spike in the 35-40 psi range. Turns out the wastgate/boost controller had malfunctioned causing the spick. I headed back to pit road to fix the problem but the damage had already been done. With the help of vene we got the wastegate working again but the car started overheating. I started to worry that we had blown the head gasket but headed back to grid to try to make some runs anyway. My second run the car was way down on power and it started smoking slightly the run wasn’t that great as i was still trying to figure out the track. My third and final practice lap all the problems became much worse the engine dumped smoke throughout the entire run, started overheating again, and was even more down on power. We checked the oil level on pit road and we had burned an entire quart in one run. After much debate I decided to retire from the event and save what was left of the engine. It was a tough break after all the work we put in to make the event but it was the best decision in the end.

Re: New86race car
After getting the car back to Texas i quickly got to work trying to find the problem. After a compression and leak down test it was apparent that we had lost the number three cylinder. I pulled the car in the garage and started pulling the engine.

Man Will, so sorry to hear but it looks like you're back in the action.
Re: New86race car
i thought hondas had a block stiffner that went in the water jacket around the cylinders at the deck. that and block guard it.
