My 3tc keeps shutting off
My 3tc keeps shutting off
I was going to swap it out but decided its best to keep it.
I turned the car on with a little bit of gas to the carb.
I drove it around the block and died the second time I tried.
When I press the gas, it sounds like its not sucking gas. I turned it
on again and let it idle but when I gave it gas, it died again.
Now it won't start. What do you guys think it is?

Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
bad fuel pump, too rich flooding it out, mine did something like this when I had a bad coil... a lot of things it could be. start by checking the fuel pump
Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
I thought it would be the fuel pump too but my guy said it's relatively new and it's probably the port plugs under the header (its missing two) or a leak from the carb since the vaccum delete. & apparently the fuel filter was bypassed (Idk why you would do that). How could I test the fuel pump?
Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
You can test a fuel pump with a volt meter

I would check all of the vacuum lines first personally. Especially on and around plastic canisters.

3TC mechanical fuel pump are about 30 bux at autozone. i wonder if it's the timing that's way off.

That was another though I had as well... firing sequence too.SkabRock5 wrote:3TC mechanical fuel pump are about 30 bux at autozone. i wonder if it's the timing that's way off.
On another note. I have no idea what I was thinking when I posted that other "how to test your fuel pump" deal ... yours is mechanical, the one I sent is for electrical. This one is correct

This is a decent explanation as well

Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
Another possibility could be that the distributor itself could bo off by one tooth. It has happened to me during reassembly.

Get 'er done then and report your findings.

Oh! I got confused. Doh!
Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
Lol you guys are havin your own moment. haha yeah I was watchin it like, "I don't remember seeing any wires on my fuel pump..." but thanks. I'll try it out tomorrow.
Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
So I disconnected the hose to from the pump to the carb but there was plenty of gas that spilled out so I decided just to reconnect it. When I did though, the reservoir filled up again but I found a vac outlet on the carb leaking gas so I went to autozone, bought some vaccum caps & finally got it running again. Now I have a burst hose but I'll fix that tomorrow. Thanks everyone.

Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
That's great to know it was a cheap fix . Glad nothing caught fire during all of that.
Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
Awesome! Vacuum leaks are always the first thing I look for on carbed cars
Easier to pin point if you use a piece of vacuum line like a stethascope ... for future use.

Re: My 3tc keeps shutting off
Yeah I got all different kinds of answers so I tried each one by what seemed easiest. I thought it would be harder b/c the holes were previously plugged with bolts & hosepieces so I just replaced all of them.milchmann wrote:Awesome! Vacuum leaks are always the first thing I look for on carbed cars
