Vicious steering angle
Vicious steering angle
I got this idea from a riding lawn mower at homo depo.
It says "zero turn radius" For all of you who do not know what ZTR means... Go back to school.
On most ZTR machines, it consists of 2 rear independently driven wheels with 2 front casters. "changing direction upon force"
Well. This mower that I saw ZTR on was in fact a front wheel steering normal run-of-the-mill lawn tractor you see everywhere. I immediately called BS, hopped on it and started steering.... the front tires were almost perfectly sideways. WTF!
Ever seen forklift steering? They usually lock out at zero degrees perfectly perpendicular to the drive tires. This mower was almost just like that, but minus a few degrees.
I started thinking... And then I figured if they did it with a mower, I should do it with my corolla! CRAZY ANGLES HERE I COME!!
I'm planning on mapping out how they did everything and see if I can beef it up and apply it to a steering rack.
All ideas and comments welcome.
For reference:
This is the cub cadet ZTR claimed lawn tractor that I got the idea from.
This is the normal ZTR that home depot sells "TORO time cutter" notice the front casters.

its could work to a degree. you won't get that much angle due to the fact that your stearing rack is set up on a rod (tie rods) so you can only go as far as they let you. the mower is set up on free floating wheels that can turn all the way due to the fact that the back wheels turn the mower just like a wheel chair. so you are limited to the ability of your tie rods. you would also have to hack up your wheel well due to hitting it at extream angle.

yeah the max angle you can get in the wheel well is spacers or tierods and a manual steering rack with powersteering knuckles. I have no idea why more steering angle than that would be usefull. the amount of work it would take to figure it all out and cut up the wheel wells makes it not worth it.

I'm going to have to lengthen the lower control arm to fix that issue. But its all in the works.
There is no point to this the angle you could drive would not be worthwhile it will just make you go really really slow and not have the ability to accelerate in drift. corollas with steering spacers alone already have more angle than 95% of the other drift cars out there

So what your saying is I need to steer the rear wheels as well?nt66 wrote:hvguy wrote:They already hit...CBR_TOY wrote:i hope you plan on cutting into the body to achieve this angle because your tires WILL hit

umm, i guess you're referring to lawn mower design school or something of that genrehvguy wrote:I got this idea from a riding lawn mower at homo depo.

...anyway, zero turn radius is completely useless in grip and drift. the car is moving much too fast AND there is such thing as "too much of a good thing" which then equates to it being a bad thing.
others have already pointed out the physical limitations due to steering hardware shared among all rwd cars.
the lawn mower's design and purpose is to facilitate the maintenance of a lawn not to clock fast course times or maintain high entry speeds, drift angle and drift speed. the lawn mower you have pictured reminds me of one of my kids' old pull along wagon where the rear wheels are static but the front are free spinning to facilitate sharp and small turning radiuses.
if you see all the best drift, time attack, road, rally footage what is out available in both hardware & know how is more than adequate to accomplish outstanding sector times, entry speeds, etc....etc...
there's nothing stopping you from experimenting with mixing mayonnaise w/ beer, neoplitan ice cream as deviled egg filler but it's not looking too good that it'll be the hit of the party as you might think. but see what you can come up with.
