GTS Differential Question

I need some advise regarding LSD's

I'm working on my SR5 to GTS conversion and I found a cheap differential that was pulled out of a 1983 GTS.

My car is a SR5 1986 coupe and it came with a welded diff. which I'm not a big fan of, as I plan to drive the car around town often..

As must of you I'm trying to keep the project in a budget...

Would this diff I found be a good option? I would guess that it will probably require a rebuilt been 25+ years old

Should I jump on it or look for something else? Or I'm better off looking for something else, a used TRD or Kaaz?

I'm noob here looking to get into my first drifts soon :D So I'm not looking for the ultimate LSD

I also plan on turboing the car in the future so the diff will have to handle 200-250whp eventually.

What would be my best option?

you'd have to purchase the zenki lsd axles with it.....

or another option is to shorten the open diff axles 5-8mm which is going to require a skilled hand

just make sure to get the appropriate axles

zenki(84-85)
kouki(86-87)

Yeap, I was aware of the lenght difference. But shaving the axles shouldn't be a problem.

I'm more concern with cost of the Toyota overhaul kit cost vs the cost of getting an aftermaket diff.

I've heard that the OE GTS diff is quite capable as long as it is in good shape. That's why I'm concidering this one.

I have friends that can assist me with a possible overhauling and installation so that's no biggie either.

then oem is a great way to go.... t3 has a rebuild for 150 i believe

That's the kind of info I was looking for...! :D $150 for a rebuild kit doesn't sounds bad.

Now, what / who is T3?

I also read about a MAXGRIP LSD rebuild kit from Weir Performance Engineering but have not found any info on the price or where to get it

www.technotoytuning.com they have a few things for the hachi. i picked up an adj lat bar from them. they are cool people to to deal. i've talked to them on the phone and e-mailed them.

looking over the MAXGRIP rebuild looks to be more aggressive than the T3 rebuild. a good deal more aggressive. also $40 more.

my preference is leaning towards the MAXGRIP.

pearsonaly i am in love with the welded diff that i have. I just recently bought one from the junk yard 53.00 with tax and that is my sopare one so far. But I havent had anytrouble with it. but i like the welded one. you should try it.

I dont have enough money to buy a gts rear end and then buy the kit ,but have they made one for the sr5 diff any company and if so lmk

also from speaking and debating with will over the weekend and again taking into account your projected horse power, you may consider keeping your slightly thicker axles over the zenki "down" grade. for the power your planning to accommodate, i'd recommend a kouki (86-87) oem LSD if you can source it OR aftermarket LSD e.g. Tomei (more inexpensive) or KAAZ (more expensive). I'm not aware of spools for kouki axles. nt66 (aka will) might have been researching this area more and may have that info.

also, you may want to consider a stronger gearbox e.g. w58 or rx-7 (one from a 13b motor). there are adapters for either.

the weakest point of the AE86es when successfully producing well over stock hp numbers will be the stock drive train. If you notice, all N2 cars sport a performance gearbox such as upgraded gears, straight cut conversion or dogboxes.

things just to consider into your equation.

but i'd recommend sticking with your later model axles if they are the slightly larger koukis.
