So what do you think? Door hinge inside
So what do you think? Door hinge inside
Since I was forced to come to work on my B-Day and it being a Saterday I thought "why not mess with this old broke door hinge?"
I have seen post here and there about saggin doors. I have seen the brass inserts you can put in them to "fix" the problem. My problem is I know how soft brass is and it only seems like a temp fix.
I drilled out the stock little pin to 1/2 diameter. The side then seemed alittle thin for my taste so I tig welded 316 around the out side to build it back up to about stock thickness. After cleaning the parts up it was on to making a pin on the lathe down an 1/2" dia 316ss pin. Put it all back together and it a nice tight fit. Feels good looks good.Im sure the 1/2 inch 316 pin will out live anything on the car haha.

Very clean fit. Would that necessarily work for all hinge pin replacement applications on the AE86, or do you think that it was just specific to the one hinge?

Im going to be doing all 4 door hinges. Im even thinking of the idea to add a grease fitting to them if I can get the correct tooling at work. But a grease fitting isnt really needed. Some say I have way too much time at work haha. I may do some other hinge pins later.GamblerZ wrote:Very clean fit. Well, I guess to let it out of the bag, I had already developed the same solution and was going to release it via NST. We were just collecting hinges. Anyway, good job there Cory. The main problem I see you may begin to have is galling. The NST hinge replacements use a copper collar at the top and the bottom for normal wear and tear.

That one thing I thought of but didnt think it would be an issue like ss on ss.
On another note I just found out we have alot of sealed roller bearings that are just about the size to press in and repin the hinge. With the roller bearings should be almost zero wear.

I am having trouble seeing where galling would be an issue here.

You'll have to take a look at 86's with worn hinges where the pin is worn away after the collar has already gone.GamblerZ wrote:I am having trouble seeing where galling would be an issue here.

I dont think it would be an issue. With the larger pins you greatly increase the surface area which reduces "cutting" effect like the smaller pin would.GamblerZ wrote:I am having trouble seeing where galling would be an issue here.
