4ag problem expert advice needed vid inside

Post by aj.hudson »

Hi guys I just picked up this sweet mr2. Its super clean apart from the engine.. the kid i got it from said it blew the hg and got it repaired but didnt touch the head... the head does look clean though.
Anyways theres some minor problems with the motor ie fuel inj leaks coolant leaks squeaky belts ect. Main problem is the rodknock metallic ticking/clanking coming from the engine.
its pretty loud but when i rev the motor it seems to go away only to come back when the revs come back down. Its weird because doesnt rodknock sound increase with the revs? Also its been beyond years since ive driven a bone stock 16v but the motor seem to pull fine.. Also seems too loud to be badly adjusted valves...right? Any help before i try and get into the motor would be appreciated..

Check valve lash.

The head may not be straight which may explain the coolant leak.

Where is the leak on the fuel injection? Possibly change out injector o-rings?

The head looks to be rebuilt...not sure tho its pretty clean... The coolant leak is on the back of the head I can see the leak its just a gasket change so thats no big deal and the injector probably are the seals no problem there either... Just worried about this bottom end... I really dont think its valves I havent had the feelers in there yet but it all "seemed" to be okay... I would assume you would actually be able to SEE something abnormal to be getting noise like that....right..? Also the fact that it goes away when it revs puzzles me.... Here are some pics I took today when I pulled the cam covers....

I took a pic of all 8 pairs of valves if you wanna see em they are here....

whats the oil pressure like at idle? should be near halfway on the gauge at idle.

Also try changing the oil. Look for any milking in it and see if that helps. 4AGE's factory ran 10w40 here in the states. Try some 20w50 and see what that does.

Sounds more like a bearing "knock". Is the head on or off at this point and is the timing belt still on?

Just thought of this and maybe its me being optimistic... but the timing belt is still on and by turning it clockwise couldnt the clicking be the belt jumping the teeth? the cams are misaligned now....

Well the motor is definately coming out...the tbelt definately was skipping.... removed the belt and all clicking is gone... The belt was really loose...

And the valves were out of spec with some being waaay off...

I got a ton of shims from the junkyard like over 30.. 7afe's are pretty good donors due to the ease of getting them and theres always a bunch at the yard. If anyone needs some shims when Im done lmk im sure Ill have plenty....

I am now pretty sure it was the loose belt coupled with some out of spec valves causing the noise.
We shall see I am going to get a reseal kit and check all the specs along the way.
Motor has to come out first. Never pulled a car off a motor.. wish me luck..lol

If anyone is interested in what the sound was I'm about 90% sure what it was.... upon removing the timing covers I found the tensioner bearing just flopping around.. that's right no bolt whatsoever...so at idle the random clacking when revved belt tension pulls the bearing away and the clacking ceases... make sense? Along with that half the bolts holding this motor together were loose. Amazing it ran at all!

haha gotta love other peoples work that just half ass it. I seem to be a huge fan of those for some reason. Well I haven't watched the video's due to me being on my phone...and at work (love watching progress bars) so that's good you are probably going through it. Might has well replace all the hard to reach crap if it's going back in an MR2. Those things suck to replace parts on when it's in the car.

Oh and the aw11 is REALLY light without the engine. A friend and I moved the ass end about 10 feet without really trying and we are not the biggest guys in the world. LOL

good luck to you sir. I'm about to take an AW11 to a junkyard/crusher here soon.
